The origin of a new world (2023)
Reimagined Folktale & Performance
The Origin of a New World reinterprets and recontextualizes a folktale originating from the Lisu people, a Tibeto-Burman ethnic group residing in the mountainous regions of Myanmar, southwest China, Thailand, and India's Arunachal Pradesh. This common household tale throughout Myanmar recounts how nature assisted humans in surviving a catastrophic flood and navigating the new world. Revisiting this tale that I have heard and read a million times before, I was fascinated by the relevance and importance of this old tale to the modern world that we live in right now.
Through this project, I reimagined the folktale into a narrative that reflects the traditions and beliefs of a distant land, transcending geographical and cultural boundaries, and at the same time, maintaining its original essence of ecological harmony and human connection to nature. Using folklore and myths as cultural repositories of ecological wisdom, I attempt to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and public engagement in environmental issues.
